two of my favorites

I will always buy fresh zucchini and yellow squash. Sautéed with onions, garlic, tomatoes, and olive oil, it's almost a meal in itself!

reborn beauty

Out of the oscillation of our lives' relative polarities evolves our balance. Thus, out of death springs life anew.

stars on the water

Again with the lights off docks and boats and houses glinting off the water's surface. Same South River vantage point, different direction. Looks like I even caught a plane streaking through the sky too!

south river

After eating obscene amounts of pulled pork, the crew took a walk. I brought my camera. The lighted towers in the distance are part of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

back in the day

This was the only ride deemed safe when I was a kid. No moving parts and a burlap sack equaled fun. I didn't ride this one. There didn't seem to be a carny nearby to hand out the burlap.

keeping watch

Arlington's finest were on hand to keep order. Deep-fried Oreos weren't as delicious as last year. Next year, I think I'm going to enter the photography competition.

random smokestack

I'm not really sure what this building is now or what it used to be. I'm tempted to reach the rungs on this chimney and climb up to the top.

the rest of the story

There's a crane near my house that hasn't moved in years it would seem, though I'd venture a guess that it's only been months. It has a cracked windshield, rusted cables, and extensions for the boom laying next to it. There's not a job site near it, nor any indication of who it belongs to. I've always wanted a crane! Finders keepers?

a frayed...cable

Any guesses on what it belongs to? I'll post the rest of the story, as it were, tomorrow.

the main hall

Union Station is a grand hall with gorgeous high ceilings. It's quite photogenic; no wonder I had so much fun snapping shots.

the real colors

The sun was just beginning to creep out from behind the clouds. Didn't touch the color on this one, just tweaked the exposure. It just looks like it's sepia-toned.

the district waking up

Apparently, someone roaming a transportation hub with an SLR rouses more suspicions than it used to. I got questioned by three security officers after taking this picture. I left soon thereafter and saw a large number of K-9 units parked outside. Something was up.

12 August 2009

hidden in plain view

George Washington Carver once said, "I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in." I tend to agree.

11 August 2009

saturated landmark, part deux

Two weeks ago, I went to Screen on the Green on the National Mall. The weather was threatening off in the distance. Strange looking clouds enveloped the Washington Monument. In trying to catch some lightning, I got this shot, played with the saturation, and this came out. Too much digital noise to make a great large print, but on a small scale, what do you think?

09 August 2009

saturated landmark

I started playing around with the saturation levels in Picasa with this print. I think it made it look more cohesive. The reds of the Golden Gate were lost in the photo until I abused the rest of the frame. I kind of like it, though. Has a watercolor feel to it now.

zuke flowers

Looks like my aunt's going to have a bumper crop this year. Many zucchini flowers brighten her garden presently. It won't be too long before she has a whole mess of zukes to cook up.

05 August 2009

free birds

The Cambria County Jail is an imposing edifice in the center of town. Well, at least it used to be. No inmates are housed there anymore, but it had them when I was a kid. Despite 22 foot walls, I was still a wee bit creeped out by a correctional facility being across the street from the bar my family ran for 67 years.

reflections on a theme

I came upon a motorcycle during the Golden Hour. Its chrome accents and accessories made for some interesting late day photographs. I got at it from all different angles. Here are the two best, one in color, one black & white.

changing of the guards

Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God. Less than 20% of all volunteers are accepted for training and of those only a fraction pass training to become full-fledged Tomb Guards. The sentinels do not wear rank insignia on their uniforms so that they do not outrank the Unknowns, whatever their rank may have been.

"kiss me..."

Made it out to Screen on the Green for the first time this season. When the HBO music comes on, we get up and dance interpretively to it. I tried to capture it. A little abstract, not sure what I think of it though. Opinions?
