hydrangea

Wow. It's been a while since I've posted regularly. Last summer, I focused primarily on doing so. This summer, my focus has been on getting our kitchen functional again. That includes carefully snaking the extension cords around her lovely hydrangeas. The joys of home ownership!

tiny joy

"Know that a flower is a weed seen through joyful eyes."--Jonathan Lockwood Huie

When I was little, we used to play with these tiny flowers. I don't recall seeing them in anyone's lawns growing up because they were called weeds and prevented with herbicides and lawnmowers. I guess my eyes are still joyful.

springtime

Crocuses are supposed to be the first flowers to bloom, often poking their heads up through a late-season snowfall. Since we didn't get any snow this winter worth shoveling, these guys were early to the dance and seem to be staying past closing. I'm okay with that this year.

realized

It was somewhere near this flower that I realized my mistake and frantically went back through the gardens we were in, trying desperately to recreate some of the shots I'd taken in the last 20 minutes or so. The boat cruise was a lost cause.

little. yellow. different.

The histogram for this seemingly simple shot looks like the Hindu Kush in central Asia.

the others

We went for a walk on the azalea-lined path. Few of those shots came out. I was much more pleased with the random ones I showed some lens love to. This one would've fit nicely with all my out-of-focus Monet-inspired shots from last summer.

old dominion

"Janie, the dogwood is a tree. It's not a flower."
"Actually, it's a tree and a flower."

[insert gasp here]

At least that was her reaction to this shot. More depth of field needed?

'tis the season

It's been a few years since I've managed to venture out at exactly the right time to get a decent shot of D.C.'s famous cherry blossoms. It's that time of year, and yet again, I'm going to miss peak bloom; this time because of a wedding. One of these years, I'll get down to the Tidal Basin before sunrise and get some classics.

roadside beauty

At the beginning of June, these tiny flowers appeared in the median on my way to work. I'd never have noticed them were it not for the interminably long light. I wandered over with my prime and screw-in macro filters.

hard decisions

Last weekend, I went out in the parking lot to take some photos of these ubiquitous blooming orange day lilies. They're everywhere. Their colors just plain pop in real life, and I had a really hard time deciding which photo was the best of the bunch. I had to be extra critical of the entire frame, bokeh and all. Good choice?

distracted

I get easily distracted by bright flowers. We were walking to the Pentagon Memorial to check it out. I'm still sorting through those shots.

more from the bouquet

Another homegrown petal shot. I think I'm getting the hang of these macro filters: small aperture, long exposure.

a single rose

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. No one appreciated the flowers more than my better half!

opening bud

Before I left for spring break, I had a chance to get on my belly at school and snap a few of the flowers littering our campus. This bud has most likely bloomed and moved on since it was taken.

petal depth

I wish I'd had more depth of field in this shot. Macro photography is a whole different animal that I'm going to have to get used to.

tiny flowers

In between climbs, I got on my belly to take some macro pictures of flowers that were dwarfed by the pennies in my pocket.
