cumberland pit stop

I told the story of why I stopped in Cumberland, Maryland a while back. I was hopeful for a clean photograph of the library linked above. I've often seen this town from above on Interstate 68. I'm glad I took the detour to photograph a building or two.

detour

I took a detour back from visiting my grandma. It took me over the hills and through the woods. A much nicer drive than the Pennsylvania Turnpike! I stopped in Bedford for a cup of coffee and took my cameras for a walk. I should do this more often.

the big picture

She complained about my not taking the big picture shots this weekend. I guess I have been on a details kick lately. Here's something closer to the big picture from the National Cathedral.

planning

With snow on my windshield, I found my way to the cathedral with a freshly-charged battery. I had a few ideas in my head for what I wanted to capture. It took a little while longer with services going on, but I needed some religion anyhow.

cell phone photography

Several months ago, I tried to upgrade my cell phone to one that wasn't falling apart at the seams. The one I found turned out to be a camera with a cell phone glommed onto it. It did neither job well. So, I returned it for a phone that was more phone and less portmanteau. It turned out to have some cool photo features, including a night vision setting. Without my camera yet again, I spotted a power line sparking in tonight's snow storm that was causing the lights in an adjacent church to surge as if someone was messing with the dimmer. Reminds me a bit of the blizzard shots in Charlie Chaplin's Gold Rush.

parisian gothic

I took many many photos of Notre Dame. It took walking around the cathedral for me to realize that it means "Our Lady." French isn't my first language, in case you were wondering.

la sainte chapelle

This "chapel" was built for the royalty. Its stained glass windows are towering and awe-inspiring. More history from Wikipedia. I had quite a time trying to get properly exposed shots, handheld and in a crowd.

ye olde north church

"All this history around you, and you're taking a photo of a car windshield."
Indeed.

light stalking

Light across the floor leads me to the pews in the grand expanse of the church. It is an awe-inspiring building.

votives

I have two shots of prayer votives from inside the church. By a slim margin, this was deemed the better of the two. Ma lit a few of them, in prayers of thanks I'm sure.

The front facade towers above those who enter, covered with intricate carvings.

basilica

As suggested by a friend, we ventured out to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Catholic University's campus in Washington, D.C. It was a beautiful morning to be out and about with my camera.

through these doors

On opposite sides of the gates read these two signs. One, "Enter God's gates with thanksgiving. Two, "Go into God's courts with praise." (ISO 100, f/4.0, 1/500s)
