fine tuning

I've often looked at photos of doorways and wondered how the eyes behind the lenses trained themselves how to compose the shots, making them catch the viewers' eyes as it caught theirs. Something I've learned recently: practice. Everyone seems to have their own tricks. If it's the color you want, make your camera capture the color. Fool around with the settings, and take 100 different shots of the same door. Bring them home, and critique them. Good luck remembering the setting you liked best!

base ten exposure values

It's far too rare that I take a trip into the District lately. I often see these mirrors and think they'd make an interesting shot. I think I'll be on the hunt for more of these on my next foray across the Potomac.

view from a puddle of snow

That strange photographer's eye came out again just as I was meeting a friend for lunch near Eastern Market. Shadows, reflections, an alternative viewpoint. Good times.

old man winter

For the second time this season, we had some snow. Real, measurable snow. Much better than last year's slate of sleet and ice and rain.

ivy covered brick, round two

This one looked best on the Nikon's LCD; unfortunately, not so on the computer screen. I adjusted the shadows slightly to bring out the texture of the brick and applied a slight tint to it. I quite like it.

ivy covered brick, round one

I took several pictures of an ivy-covered wall near the Falls Church Farmers' Market. This one was deemed the best by virtue of its balance.

leaving the shadows

Restlessness compelled us to walk around Old Town last weekend. It's been that kind of month that it's taken me this long to upload them to my computer, let alone post-process the shots.

random smokestack

I'm not really sure what this building is now or what it used to be. I'm tempted to reach the rungs on this chimney and climb up to the top.
